syiyaya Upcoming Events October will be a busy month for our "Carving Tears into Dreams of Reconciliation" project as we participate in the Sechelt Arts Festival, and Sunshine Coast Art Crawl.
SECHELT ARTS FESTIVAL Join shíshálh Nation tour guide and anthropologist Candace Campo on a totem tour walk in Sechelt and visit master carver Tony Paul’s totem carving project. The art, stories, and history of the shíshálh Nation will be shared and explored on the walk, as you learn about local totems, the carvers, the stone sculptures and historical buildings. This is a great way to learn about local history, lore, current events, and the First Nation’s people who have lived in the Sechelt area for generations. And the best part? Admission is free!! SUNSHINE COAST ART CRAWL?imash ?imash! All are welcome to come and learn about the syiyaya Reconciliation Movement’s Carving Reconciliation Project and carve a notch into the Reconciliation Pole with shíshálh Master Carver ?antuni Tony Paul. Tony is a Residential School Survivor who has practiced his art form from the young age of 16 years. He has developed a beautiful design for the 30 ft Pole to ground us in truth as we begin the healing journey towards reconciliation at the site of the former Residential School. Come hear the story of the pole, and add your notch to this incredible cedar carving.NOTE: This will likely be the last opportunity for the public to carve with Tony, so please make the most of it! Feel free to stop by between 10am and 5pm on Friday October 18th, Saturday October 19th or Sunday October 20th. The carving site is located at 5555 Sunshine Coast Highway (beside the Raven's Cry Theatre and shishalh Nation Administration Complex).
