Interested in a new and socially responsible way to experience Christmas? Come and join us at the Posada for the Homeless and Migrants on December 20! Las Posadas is lodging, or accommodation in Spanish, which in this case refers to the re-enactment of the inn in the story of the nativity of Jesus. It is celebrated chiefly in Latin America, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, and by Hispanics in the United States during the Christmas season. Two people dress up as Mary and Joseph. Others follow their journey as pilgrims. Certain houses are designated to be an "inn" (thus the name "Posada"). At each house, the resident responds by singing a song and Mary and Joseph are finally recognized and allowed to enter. Once the "innkeepers" let them in, the group of guests come into the home, pay homage at the Nativity scene, and celebrate a feast. St. Hilda's and RainCity Sunshine Coast Shelter is co-sponsor the first Posada this year on Thursday, December 20.
We will gather at the Sechelt Shelter (5653 Wharf Ave.) at 3 pm. We will collect all the potluck dishes and have them transported to St. Hilda's for the community meal later. Participants will join Mary and Joseph visiting a number of homes in the Village until they find a welcoming door. The pilgrimage ends with a community potluck at St. Hilda’s (5838 Barnacle St.) at 5 pm. All are welcome. Dressed warmly for the weather and be prepared to walk 1.5 km. Donations for services supporting the migrants and homeless will be collected during the potluck dinner.
